Driving Toward Independence: Cherokee Journey to Success
Every journey begins with a single step, and for Cherokee, that step was joining GOODWILL INDUSTRIES® of Wayne and Holmes Counties in December 2022.
As a determined young participant in the Comprehensive Case Management and Employment Program (CCMEP) TANF, Cherokee faced several challenges, including low income and a lack of transportation. However, through our focused mission to empower individuals, Cherokee was ready to transform her life.
Taking the Wheel of Her Future
During her time at GOODWILL ®, Cherokee embraced the resources available to her, demonstrating remarkable resilience and motivation. With the guidance of dedicated career mentors, she engaged in career planning that provided her with essential skills and confidence to move forward. One of her most significant accomplishments was obtaining her driver’s permit—an achievement that symbolizes her emerging independence. This milestone not only grants her the ability to drive but also opens doors to future employment opportunities that were previously out of reach.
From Dreams to Driveways
Following her success in obtaining her permit, Cherokee accomplished another major goal: she purchased her first car. This achievement is more than just a mode of transportation; it represents freedom and a significant step toward self-sufficiency. Cherokee now has the means to explore job opportunities, attend interviews, and connect with community resources—each move aligning closely with GOODWILL ®’s mission of fostering economic independence for participants.
