Two Journeys of Recovery, Resilience, and Workforce Success in Wayne County, Ohio

Goodwill Wayne & Holmes Names William Parrish and Marie Bryant as 2026 Graduates of the Year

Every year, Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties recognizes individuals whose determination, growth, and perseverance embody the power of work. These stories often reflect courage, resilience, and personal transformation.

This year's Graduates of the Year, William Parrish and Marie Bryant, represent all of those qualities and more.

Their story is not polished. It is not simple. It is not easy. It is a story about grief, addiction, recovery, second chances, and two people rebuilding a life while learning how to rebuild themselves at the same time.

If you meet William today, you'll likely notice his energy first. He is passionate, outgoing, and impossible to ignore when he walks into a room. Beside him is Marie, quieter but equally strong, carrying the kind of resilience that can only come from surviving life's most difficult challenges. What many people don't immediately see is how hard they fought to get here.

Overcoming Loss, Addiction, and Life's Greatest Challenges

Several years ago, William and Marie experienced the unimaginable loss of their infant son. The grief was overwhelming.

Like many families facing profound loss, the emotional pain eventually spiraled into addiction. Over time, addiction impacted nearly every aspect of their lives, including their health, relationships, stability, and future.

After the birth of their youngest son, they found themselves facing another difficult battle: fighting to regain a place in his life.

Situations like this can break people. There were moments when it nearly broke them too. But instead of giving up, they chose a different path. Not through one dramatic moment or overnight transformation. Through difficult decisions made one day at a time.

Choosing Recovery and a Better Future

William entered treatment and committed himself to recovery. Marie pursued her own recovery journey while working to rebuild her confidence, identity, and role as a mother.

Together, they navigated court systems, counseling appointments, transportation barriers, financial challenges, and the difficult process of rebuilding trust in themselves and one another.

The road was far from easy. Yet they kept moving forward. One step. One day. One choice at a time.

Their determination eventually led them to Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties through the WorkFirst Training Program, funded by the Wayne County Department of Job and Family Services.

Workforce Development Support Through Goodwill Wayne & Holmes

The WorkFirst Training Program helps Wayne County residents overcome barriers to employment by providing workforce development services, career training opportunities, support services, and individualized guidance.

For William and Marie, the program became much more than a workforce initiative. It became part of the foundation on which they rebuilt their lives. Through the program, both individuals participated in training opportunities at the Wayne County Schools Career Center.

Marie pursued healthcare training and earned her State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) certification. She continues to build her future while working toward completing her GED. William completed welding coursework and earned multiple welding certifications, gaining valuable skills and confidence that helped prepare him for long-term employment success.

The First Couple Ever Named Goodwill Graduates of the Year

This year marks a first for Goodwill Wayne & Holmes.

William Parrish and Marie Bryant are the first couple to receive the Graduate of the Year recognition together. While their journeys were shared in many ways, they remained two separate individuals with two separate cases, supported by two different Goodwill case managers.

Behind the scenes, those case managers worked closely together to coordinate services, remove barriers, solve problems, and ensure both William and Marie had the support needed to continue moving forward.

That support included assistance navigating transportation challenges, training opportunities, court requirements, childcare responsibilities, scheduling conflicts, and other obstacles that can prevent individuals from achieving their goals.

But support alone was not enough. William and Marie still had to choose the future they wanted. And they did.

The Power of Work Changes Lives

At Goodwill Wayne & Holmes, we often talk about the power of work.

For William and Marie, that phrase became a reality. Work is about more than earning a paycheck. It is about rebuilding confidence. It is about creating stability. It is about providing for your family. It is about believing you have value and something meaningful to contribute.

Today, Marie is building a career helping others through healthcare. William's journey has also come full circle within Goodwill itself.

He began working at Goodwill's Orrville retail store before transitioning into Industrial Services. Today, he serves on Goodwill's donated goods transportation team, driving between locations and connecting employees throughout the organization with his larger-than-life personality and enthusiasm.

Together, they have rebuilt something that once felt impossible. A stable home. A future. A family that continues moving forward.

Recovery Is a Journey, Not a Destination

One of the most powerful parts of William and Marie's story is that it isn't finished.

Recovery is not a finish line. Healing is not instant. Parenting is hard. Relationships are hard. Life is hard. There will still be challenges ahead.

But William and Marie have already proven something extraordinary: They know how to keep fighting.

When asked about his experience, William shared: "I'm eternally grateful. Goodwill helped me become the person I am today."
